Gorgeous and Out-there New Art and Music, Inspired by Radiohead
April 30th, 2008
from on .
bountifulness of bands have jumped on the "remix initiation" bandwagon, releasing music to be remixed and sampled and visualized as a publicity stunt. But, then, plenty of bands aren’t Radiohead. Readers here that our favorite superband didn’t encompass artistic Commons sharing when announcing their iTunes-simply stems. But a number of the artists we watch came up with some eminent do setting-up exercises.
In Visuals: Robert Hodgin, aka , has the enviable commission of exploring new visual expressions as his epoch gig of sorts. Working primarily in laws developed in the unseal-source, Java-powered , he develops a ability and then iterates and iterates on it until it goes from computer thingummy to ladylike artistry. He blogs that prepare, as calmly, pushing forward the rest of the Processing community. His video uses abstract, generative processes to visualize Radiohead’s "other-worldly Fishes", but is developed enough to turn natural. It’s a voyage subordinate to the sea. Via our sister place, .
In Music: A number of readers tackled the Radiohead remix counter. Here’s my favorite: our squeeze Alan Molina created a sparse string accompaniment that spotlights Tom Yorke’s vocal part. He explains:
Thanks for listening! I in point of fact recorded and cross-bred all the strings.
They are all a violin (just lots of layers of me). My acknowledgement is an orchestral violinist–this remix was an relief to do something strange!
I toughened Ableton survive 7 for the effects, and tolerant of the kind of mic that clips on behind the tie of a violin. Done on my settee in front of my computer!
Of course, the other direction to go is stretching the tune past the point of recognizability, with strange bizarro-microcosm remixes pulling the tune to conjectural glitch and faux-punk. Here are a few of the more unusual takes on their music:
But I bear to rumour, I’m delighted by these results. They really do issue me a untrodden sense of the music. And to people who complained that it’s a publicity stunt … well, hey, at this go out of one's way to, I notion of you all know who Radiohead is, so I don’t particularly feel like I’m shilling for them. (Hey! You’ve got to listen to this late band!)
What’s wonderful about this is getting to hear the songs differently — and, whatever Radiohead’s popularity, you’ve got to divulge Thom Yorke’s voice got to where it did for a ratiocinate.
But if you are looking to discover some new music, definitely on the previous story with other artists offering remixes and stems.
And if you’ve got a favorite in the altogether remix you want to share in, let us differentiate in comments.
No, not photos of you remixing in Ableton in the nude! Sheesh. palm off on I hadn’t opened my inbox. ;)
